Potential Russian Influence in the Arctic Expands Threat to the UK

Norwegian Defence Minister Tore Sandvik has warned that Russia must not be allowed to gain control of the Bear Gap, a strategic maritime corridor between mainland Norway and Bear Island. Sandvik cautioned that control of the passage would enhance Russia's ability to deploy submarines and long-range weapons from the Kola Peninsula, home to its Northern Fleet and much of its sea-based nuclear deterrent, and enable Russia to threaten NATO targets, including London, with hypersonic missiles.

The Royal United Services Institute's (RUSI) analysis illustrates why this threat is taken seriously by UK defence policymakers. It argues that, while the UK has pivoted towards the High North over the past decade, this ambition has not been matched by sufficient military resources, and calls for a greater British leadership role and military presence in the region. The UK has already committed to doubling its troop presence in Norway to 2,000 personnel and participating in NATO's expanding Arctic operations.
