Russian-Linked Amplification of UK Civil Disorder

Recent violent protests across the UK have highlighted the extent to which the country is being targeted by state and non-state actors seeking to heighten societal division. A recent investigation by Byline Times indicates that a Russian ultranationalist network linked to Kremlin‑associated figures, The Brotherhood of Academists, actively promoted “White Lives Matter” narratives during the June protests following the murder of Henry Nowak and amplified mobilisation through far‑right intermediaries, including StephenYaxley‑Lennon (Tommy Robinson).

This mirrors patterns seen during the August 2024 riots, when coordinated disorder across cities including Sunderland, Hartlepool and Rotherham, sparked by the murder of three children, was assessed by former MI6 officer Christopher Steele as showing “clear” Russian involvement. It also reflects a wider pattern of loosely connected networks operating across multiple jurisdictions seeking to destabilise the UK through coordinated information manipulation and the incitement of disorder.

Last month, Foreign Affairs Select Committee Chair Dame Emily Thornberry criticised the government’s inaction and called for the creation of a National Counter Disinformation Centre to lead a united response to anti-democratic campaigns. Failing to fully understand the breadth and complexity of these actors, or to develop a coherent national strategy to counter them, risks leaving the UK exposed to continued hybrid attacks and escalating domestic instability.
