Five Arrested Near RAF Fairford Amid Suspected Iranian Link

In the early hours of 27th September 2026, five British men aged between 23 and 25 were arrested after three suspicious white vans were spotted near RAF Fairford. The men were arrested under the Explosives Act, and later on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act. No explosive devices were found, although petrol was recovered from the scene. The men were bailed the following day, and a further arrest, of a dual UK-Iranian citizen, was made on Thursday. At the time of writing, motivation is unknown.

On 30 September, Prime Minister Andy Burnham said that there was "strong indications" that Iran had played a part in the incident; a view shared with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the incident "clearly involves the hands of a foreign actor." Despite this, the Iranian embassy in London "categorically rejects" that it had any involvement.

The incident fits an established pattern of Iranian-linked activity in the UK. MI5 tracked more than 20 potentially lethal Iran-backed plots in the year to October 2025, with these plots often relying on criminal proxies recruited online. However, analysts argue the fact the men were granted bail suggests the evidence of an imminent attack was limited, combined with the reported 999 call by one of the men points away from a traditional attack plot. The incident reflects, despite Tehran's denial, Iran's apparent willingness to use deniable proxies against US assets hosted in the UK.
