Russian Warship Fires Warning Shots at British Yacht in the English Channel

On 16 June, the Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich fired warning shots during an encounter with the British-flagged yacht Bright Future in the English Channel outside UK territorial waters, approximately 20 nautical miles (37km) south of the Isle of Wight.

Russia claimed the yacht posed a collision risk after failing to respond to radio calls, with an MoD spokesperson stating the shots were "an attempt to prevent a possible collision". The yacht’s skippers, Jane and Alan Kelvey disputed this, stating the vessel was "definitely not on a collision course", and that no radio signal was sent or flares fired.

Even though the UK assessed the encounter as an isolated maritime safety incident, the decision to discharge warning shots from a naval warship towards a civilian yacht raises legitimate questions over the proportionality of Russia's response. Its timing, just days after the UK's interception of the sanctioned tanker SMYRTOS, is also difficult to ignore. Britain should expect a more assertive Russian naval posture as enforcement against the shadow fleet continues.
